Background: Statins are widely prescribed cholesterol-lowering drugs. They inhibit cholesterol synthesis through inhibition of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase. They have also been recently identified as bone stimulatory agents (Mundy et al., 1999).
